“Başkent University 1st High School Team Chess Tournament”, which was organized with the cooperation of Turkish Chess Federation and Başkent University and which was the scene of the struggle for the summit among the high school teams, was completed on 28 May 2017.
After the final round of the team chess tournament which was held at Başkent University Bağlıca Campus with the participation of 36 teams and 213 high school athletes, the awards were presented to their owners.
A lot of high school students were hosted on the Başkent University campus in the organization that aimed to popularize chess among the high schools. While Çiğli Science High School became the champion, Mehmet Emin Resulzade Anatolian High School became the first runner-up, Gazi Anatolian High School was the second runner-up, Betül Can Anatolian High School got the fourth place, and Mustafa Azmi Doğan Anatolian High School finished the tournament in the fifth place.
In the tournament, where the teams consisted of 4 full and 2 reserve players, the top five athletes for each table were given an award. During the award ceremony of the tournament, as well as cups and medals, many awards were also distributed to the students and their schools,.
Tournament Chief Referee FA Specialist Aylin İbişoğlu expressed her congratulations to all the athletes who had competed in a gentlemanly manner. Referring to the importance of the inter-high school chess tournament, İbişoğlu stated that the tournament will contribute to the increase of the popularity of chess among the high schools.
Başkent University Director of the Center for Education and Counseling Services (BEDAM) Prof. Dr. Ali Halıcı stated that they were very happy to host the high school students at Başkent University. He also said that the tournament formed an important basis for the coming years. Halıcı thanked all the participants and invited all high school students to the tournament where bigger prizes would be given the following year.
