Turkish Chess Federation and Başkent University have signed a cooperation protocol regarding the organization of the International Chess Tournament in Ankara every July and the holding the National Team camps at Başkent University. Within the framework of the cooperation negotiations, it was also reported that the preparation which will provide scholarship opportunities to the athletes who have achieved degrees in the chess sport will be implemented in a very short time
The cooperation protocol signing ceremony between Turkish Chess Federation and Başkent University was held at Başkent University on January 19th, 2016 with the participation of Baskent University Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Haberal, Turkish Chess Federation President Gülkız Tulay, Başkent University Director of the Center for Education and Consultancy Services (BEDAM) Prof. Dr. Ali Halıcı, Deputy Chairman of Turkish Chess Federation Aşkın Keleş, Secretary General M. Sedat Fırat, Ankara Provincial Representative WIM Nilüfer Çınar Çorlulu, Coach Aylin İbişoğluas well as Başkent University chess team players and teachers.
Within the framework of the cooperation protocol signed by Rector Haberal and Federation President Tulay, It is aimed to organize an international chess tournament in Ankara every year in July; to popularize the sport of chess at Başkent University and to organize the National team camps in the university facilities. In addition, within the framework of the cooperation negotiations, efforts will be made to provide scholarships to the athletes who have achieved degrees in chess tournaments.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President of Turkish Chess Federation Gülkız Tulay said: “We are signing a cooperation agreement with Başkent University, which is one of the most respected educational institutions in our country and which will set an example for the other universities. I would like to thank our Rector and all the management of Başkent University for their contribution towards bringing a new international tournament to our capital city Ankara and to the Turkish chess, and for their valuable support to the sport of chess.”
Başkent University Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Haberal stated that as Başkent University, they attach great importance to carrying out the activities related to a sports branch such as chess, where very important sportive achievements are accomplished, and congratulated the Turkish Chess Federation Board of Directors for their successful work.
Following the speech by Mr. Haberal, Başkent University Director of the Center for Education and Consultancy Services (BEDAM) Prof. Dr. Ali Halıcı stated that as Başkent University, they always broke new ground and stated that the tournament to be held in Ankara with the support of their universities would be the best and most successful international tournament. Halıcı also stated that they would be very happy to host the national team athletes at their university.
After the speeches at the signing ceremony, President Tulay presented a chess set to Rector Haberal. In addition, chess sets were distributed to the athletes and trainers who participated in the ceremony.
