Objective of the Program: “Editorship Courses” is a program that aims to provide participants with the ability to write a text and to reconstruct a text in an editorial sense.
This course has been prepared in order to open the doors of continuity writing, editing, proofreading and criticism to the participants and to provide a new opportunity for the participants’ professional fields. It aims at a competency level that will enable the participants to examine a text, to reconstruct it with the necessary corrections, to evaluate a text, and to be an editor as a profession.
Who Can Participate? Those who consider editing and proofreading as a prospective profession. Those who carry out correspondence in public institutions and the private sector.
Those who are interested in magazines, books and publishing. Those who would like to work as content editors, copywriters and language editors on various rapidly developing digital platforms. Those who would like to make themselves more competent in the correct spelling of Turkish language.
Training Time: 20 hours. (10 class sessions)
Content of the Training:
1 . THE PROFESSION OF THE FUTURE: EDITORSHIP.
What is the meaning of this profession for the 21st century? -Who is an editor? What are the responsibilities of an editor? How does an editor work? – The situation and education opportunities of the profession in Turkey and in the world. – e-books / audiobooks / blogs / new media applications / capabilities offered by digital platforms. -An editor’s working fields.
2 . AN EDITOR’S WORK
a) Editorial process. b) Marketing, sales and corporate process. c) Duties of a publisher’s editor. d) Distribution of duties in editorship. e) Institutional and professional hierarchy.
3 . AN EDITOR’S ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
-How is a text constructed? -How do informative and literary texts have linguistic and contextual differences? – Compliance with the basic rules of Turkish vocabulary and written expression. – Attaining the distinguished and plain language in a text. – The aesthetic and logical flow between paragraphs in short or long texts. – The correct use of the vocabulary of the language, the basic and connotative meanings of words and the meanings of metaphors, terms and idioms. – The importance of word choice and the necessity of using the appropriate word in the text. – the place of the word in the sentence; Checking for missing word or extra word. – Compliance of the text with spelling and punctuation rules.
4 . JOURNAL EDITORSHIP
-Being able to develop a journal’s strategy. – Peer-reviewed journals and others, general editing and editing rules in scientific, literary and cultural journals. -Responsibilities of a journal to the author.
5 . LITERATURE EDITORSHIP
– Fiction and non-fiction text information. – Knowledge of examining and evaluating a book file. – Practice on adequacy of correction and editing – Title of the book / front and back cover / back cover letter / page layout / title of the book / chapters and titles / printing process. – Press release and promotion of a book on visual and written platforms.
6 . NEWSPAPER EDITORSHIP
– Headline, subheadings. –Basic elements of the language of news. – Relations of time, space, causality, how it is, why it is and the subject (who) in language news. -That the sentences which make up the news text should be consistent, coherent and chronological. – Verbs of news. – Rules of news writing. -Press releases. The process of transforming the information in a press release into “news”.
7 . ABOUT EDITORSHIP OF TRANSLATED TEXTS and TRANSLATION
-Translation problems arising from the differences in the structure of languages. -Writing proper names and translation of geographical names and words. -Evaluation of some translated texts with the participants.
